About the Workshop

Join award-winning large-format landscape photographer and author Jeff Ripple November 30 through December 2, 2007 for a photographic adventure deep into the heart of the Big Cypress Swamp and Ten Thousand Islands. Jeff will emphasize the fundamentals of composing and studying natural light, in addition to covering equipment basics and the importance of learning a place in order to artfully portray it.

Friday begins with discussions of experiences and expectations for the workshop and plans for the weekend of shooting after a home-cooked dinner. On Saturday, we'll start with a sunrise photo shoot and then spend the remainder of the day on a boat tour of the Ten Thousand Islands, stopping at several islands to wade ashore and photograph birds, gifts of the tide, and of course the island landscape. We'll explore open prairies and deep swamp on Sunday in two field sessions (dawn and afternoon). Sunday morning after breakfast Jeff will present a PhotoShop printing seminar to demonstrate his printing techniques from the initial scan to the final print image. Topics covered include the importance of getting a high-quality raw digital image or scan, screen calibration, color balancing and correction, dodging and burning, sharpening, and inkjet versus photographic paper output. We finish Sunday with a pizza supper and optional slide/digital image/print critique. The additional Monday Photoshop class will expand on the concepts learned during the regular session, and we will focus on printing your work with output on an Epson Stylus Pro 4800. Each of you will walk away with your own fine print.

All film and digital formats are welcome from point and shoot to large format. A full equipment and clothing list is supplied when you register, but you will get wet in this workshop, so make sure you have suitable clothing, old sturdy shoes, and a dry bag or waterproof camera bag to protect your photo equipment.
